As Salaam Alaikum (Peace be with you)
Who are you?
Well my Pen Name is Haajarah The Hijabi. I am an ordinary American Muslim; artist, wife, and mother. Currently spending my days crocheting and somehow trying to lose weight.
How long have you been crocheting?
I learned how to crochet a simple chain from my mom when I was a kid, but I did not start to really crochet until I taught myself in November 2013.
Any advice for new crocheters?
Learn to read patterns, it opens the door to new techniques and stitches and shows you how an item comes together and act as the base where you can leap into uncharted waters. That is exactly what I did to go from following someone else’s pattern to designing my own a short time later.
What else do you do?
I like to draw from time to time, my favorite medium is pencil and ink, although I used to digitally draw/color as well. I started drawing when I was very young, and did not stop. I can also sew. These two hobbies tend to sit on the back burner as crochet has become a favorite of mine. My free-time is usually craft-time.
Plans for the future?
I am currently working on making patterns of the several Kufi designs I have made. Hoping to get them published soon, Insha’Allah (God willing)!
